Constant: Occurring continuously over a period of time. A situation or state of affairs that does not change.
What do you think of when you hear the word constant? It seems to me as though generally the word tends to hold a negative connotation…
Constantly nagging
Constant bickering
Constant complaining
We rarely hear of anyone constantly rejoicing or being constantly satisfied. Let’s face it, we live in a world that is always changing. Everything is always being updated to a better edition. Different is better. New is exciting.
But not always.
I was walking on the beach one day and was struck by the consistency of the Gulf. The tide was out so I was able to walk quite a distance out into the water. By the time I turned around to walk back, the tide had begun to come back in again. It did the very same thing twice every day. Constant. And that is a very good thing. This ensures the earth won’t drown. The water stops just where it should. The tide coming in far enough to cover the town isn’t something we worry about.
There’s comfort in the constant.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
Even though life changes around us,
time passes…
kids grow up…
people leave…
one thing we can rely on, the only thing we can truly rely on, is that God doesn’t change. He is the same God today that He was when He parted the Red Sea. He is the same God that saved three men from a fiery inferno. He is the same God who rescued Daniel from the lion’s den. He is the same God who raised Lazarus from the grave and healed blind men and caused the lame to walk. He hasn’t changed. He’s still in the rescue business. He is still all about touching lives and changing them, solving problems that seem insurmountable. He is.
There’s comfort in the constant.
